Expert centers where to consult
Mitochondrial disease specialists work in reference or competence centers dedicated to the diagnosis and monitoring of children and adults with these pathologies.

These centers are organized into two distinct networks, depending on their location:
the network CALISSON, for the South of France, is coordinated Par a center located at the Nice University Hospital. It has centers within the Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse and Montpellier University Hospitals.
the network CARAMMEL, for the North of France, includes a center located at the Necker-Enfants Malades University Hospital in Paris. It coordinates centers located at the university hospitals of Angers, Bordeaux, Bicêtre (Le Kremlin-Bicêtre), Caen, Henri Mondor (Créteil), Lariboisière (Paris), Rouen and Strasbourg.
The diagnosis and monitoring of mitochondrial diseases with ophthalmological expression, such as Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), rely more on expert centers in the OPHTARA network, which is coordinated Par a center located at the Necker-Enfants Malades Hospital (Paris). Similarly, Friedreich’s ataxia is more likely to be related to NEUROGENIC network, coordinated Par a center located within the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital (Paris).
Multiple missions
In addition to diagnosis and monitoring, the expert center teams conduct research (disease mechanisms, clinical trials, etc.), information, and training activities. They also provide resources for local healthcare professionals such as general practitioners or organ specialists (ophthalmologists, cardiologists, etc.), physiotherapists, psychologists, and anesthesiologists seeking specialized advice and opinions.
